Automotive spare parts warehouses usually handle a large number of SKUs, fragmented inventory, and frequent small-batch orders. Compared with palletized goods, small spare parts are more difficult to store, locate, pick, and sort efficiently.

For automotive after-sales service, parts distribution, and manufacturing line-side supply, the key challenge is not only storage capacity. Warehouses must also improve picking speed, inventory accuracy, and order response efficiency.

The DELIECN Mini-FlyBox ASRS is designed for high-speed picking scenarios under 12 meters. By combining Mini-FlyBox robots, high-density tote racking, tote conveyors, tote AMRs, and intelligent WMS/WCS software, the system supports dense storage, automatic retrieval, goods-to-person picking, and high-frequency order processing.

Why Automotive Spare Parts Warehouses Need Mini-FlyBox ASRS

Small spare parts are often the most complex area in an automotive warehouse.

A typical spare parts warehouse may store thousands of different components, including fasteners, electronic parts, seals, tools, consumables, repair parts, and production-side materials. These items are usually small in size, large in SKU quantity, and scattered in order demand.

Manual shelf picking creates several problems. Operators spend too much time walking and searching. Inventory locations are difficult to keep accurate. Peak order periods can quickly create bottlenecks. As SKU quantity increases, traditional shelving becomes harder to manage.

Mini-FlyBox ASRS solves these problems by converting small and fragmented parts into standard tote-based storage units. Instead of workers searching for parts across shelves, the system automatically retrieves the required totes and delivers them to picking stations.

This changes the workflow from people-to-goods to goods-to-person, reducing walking distance and improving picking efficiency.

Toyota Automotive Spare Parts Project: Mini-FlyBox in Real Operation

In the Toyota automotive spare parts warehouse project, DELIECN applied Mini-FlyBox ASRS for the automated management of small and medium-sized spare parts.

The system was designed for tote-based storage of fragmented materials, with more than 17,000 tote locations planned in the small-parts storage area.

To better match different material sizes, the storage area was divided into two tote-height zones:

  • H300 tote area: 15-level rack design, with more than 10,000 tote locations
  • H450 tote area: 11-level rack design, with more than 7,000 tote locations

This zoning design allows the warehouse to store different small and medium-sized parts more efficiently, improving space utilization while maintaining fast access.

The project configured 18 Mini-FlyBox units, working together with Mini-FlyBox racking, tote conveyors, picking workstations, tote AMRs, and electronic tag sorting systems.

With this integrated solution, the warehouse achieved automated storage, automatic retrieval, goods-to-person picking, and high-frequency order processing. The total inbound and outbound throughput reached 870 lines/hour, providing strong support for high-volume automotive spare parts fulfillment.

How Mini-FlyBox Improves Picking Efficiency

The biggest value of Mini-FlyBox ASRS is not simply storing more parts. It improves the entire picking process.

In traditional spare parts warehouses, workers need to walk between shelves, identify locations, pick parts manually, and return to sorting or packing areas. A large amount of time is spent on non-value-added movement.

With Mini-FlyBox ASRS, the system automatically retrieves totes according to order tasks and delivers them to workstations. Operators only need to pick and confirm parts at the workstation. This greatly reduces walking time, searching time, and picking errors.

When combined with conveyors and electronic tag sorting systems, the picking process becomes more continuous and accurate. For high-SKU automotive spare parts warehouses, this creates a more stable and scalable fulfillment model.

Key Benefits of Mini-FlyBox ASRS

Higher Storage Density

Mini-FlyBox uses multi-level tote racking to store a large number of small parts in a compact area. In the Toyota project, the H300 and H450 tote zones were designed separately to improve storage utilization for different item sizes.

Faster Goods-to-Person Picking

The system automatically retrieves totes and sends them to workstations, reducing manual walking and improving order response speed.

Better Inventory Accuracy

Each tote location is managed by WMS/WCS software. The system records storage locations, task status, inventory quantity, and picking information in real time.

Stronger Throughput for High-Frequency Orders

With 18 Mini-FlyBox units and integrated conveyors, workstations, AMRs, and electronic tag sorting, the Toyota project achieved 870 lines/hour total inbound and outbound throughput.

More Flexible Small Parts Management

Mini-FlyBox is suitable for automotive spare parts, electronic components, tools, consumables, production materials, and other small to medium-sized items that require fast retrieval and accurate storage.

Mini-FlyBox vs Tote Shuttle and Miniload ASRS

Different ASRS technologies are suitable for different warehouse scenarios.

Mini-FlyBox ASRS is ideal for high-speed picking scenarios under 12 meters. It is especially suitable for high-SKU small parts, fragmented materials, and goods-to-person picking where fast response is required.

Tote Shuttle ASRS is more suitable for larger-scale tote storage systems that require multi-level high-density storage and frequent tote retrieval.

Miniload ASRS is commonly used for tote or carton storage with crane-based aisle operation, especially when higher loads or specific storage structures are required.

For automotive spare parts warehouses, Mini-FlyBox is a strong choice when the project focuses on compact storage, fast picking, high-frequency order lines, and efficient workstation delivery.

When Should You Choose Mini-FlyBox ASRS?

Mini-FlyBox ASRS is suitable when your warehouse has:

  • High SKU quantity
  • Small  materials
  • Frequent picking demand
  • Limited storage space
  • High outbound order lines
  • Need for goods-to-person picking
  • Requirement for accurate inventory locations
  • Warehouse height under or around 12 meters
  • Need to reduce manual walking and searching

FAQ

1. Why is Mini-FlyBox suitable for automotive spare parts warehouses?

Automotive spare parts warehouses usually have high SKU quantity, fragmented inventory, and frequent small-batch picking. Mini-FlyBox supports tote-based storage, automatic retrieval, and goods-to-person picking, making it suitable for this type of operation.

2. What warehouse height is suitable for Mini-FlyBox ASRS?

Mini-FlyBox ASRS is designed for high-speed picking scenarios under 12 meters, especially where compact storage and fast retrieval are required.

3. Can Mini-FlyBox handle different tote heights?

Yes. The Toyota project used both H300 and H450 tote zones, with 15-level and 11-level designs respectively, to match different material sizes and storage needs.

4. Can Mini-FlyBox connect with conveyors and AMRs?

Yes. Mini-FlyBox can work with tote conveyors, picking workstations, tote AMRs, electronic tag sorting systems, WMS, and WCS to form an integrated automated picking process.

5. What is the main advantage compared with manual shelving?

The main advantage is faster goods-to-person picking. Mini-FlyBox reduces manual walking and searching, improves inventory accuracy, and supports high-frequency order processing.

Conclusion

For automotive spare parts warehouses, small parts management is often the most difficult part of warehouse operation. High SKU quantity, scattered orders, frequent picking, and limited space all require a more efficient automated storage solution.
